Local Walks

There are numerous public footpaths through the woods and fields around the village. On the SE side of the valley, the Derwent Walk Country Park, based on the line of the old Newcastle to Consett railway, includes more than 12 miles of well-maintained footpath and provides magnificent views of the valley. The route passes through woodland and runs past picturesque ponds and relaxing riverside areas. There are fragments of ancient woodland which are home to many birds including green and great spotted woodpecker, nuthatch and sparrowhawk.

A short woodland walk follows the banks of the Derwent within the Ebchester Woods, owned and managed by the National Trust.

Across the river a network of paths lead through Heugh Wood, Park Wood and beyond to Milkwell Burn Wood. The return route from Milkwell Burn follows an attractive route along the western bank of the River Derwent
